AMD Q1 2014 result: Revenues up 28% to $1.4 billion, net loss $20 million

AMD today said its Q1 2014 revenue increased 28 percent to $1.4 billion, while it posted net loss of $20 million against $146 million net loss in Q1 2013 and $89 million net profit in Q4 2013.

But its revenue dipped 12 percent sequentially.

Rory Read, AMD president and CEO, said: “Backed by our x86 processor cores and hands-down best graphics experiences, we achieved 28 percent revenue growth from the year-ago quarter. We are well positioned to continue to grow profitably as we diversify our business and enable our customers to drive change and win.”

Computing Solutions segment revenue decreased 12 percent year-over-year. The decline was due to decreased client unit shipments, said AMD. Microprocessor average selling price (ASP) decreased slightly.

Graphics and Visual Solutions segment revenue increased 118 percent driven largely by semi-custom SoCs. GPU revenue increased due to strong demand for the AMD Radeon R7 and R9 products. GPU ASP increased driven by the Radeon R7 and R9 products.

For the second quarter of 2014, AMD expects revenue to increase 3 percent, plus or minus 3 percent, sequentially.
